Kaleme Yemin Olsun ki… (Alzheimer/Demans)

By the Pen…

(Alzheimer's/Dementia)

Unlike animals, humans do not begin life with a "pre-installed program"; therefore, the human "learning process" continues from birth until death.

The fundamental stages of the human learning process are as follows:

1. Reading (3): Reading the book of the universe and written sources with one's eyes.

2. Listening (2): Listening to experts in the field, to everyone you interact with—including those you regard as a "Khidr" (a source of wisdom)—and to all the sounds emanating from the universe.

3. Writing (1): Committing to paper the knowledge gained through reading (3) and listening (2). In this sense, writing is akin to the work of a honeybee: retreating to one's own hive to transform the nectar gathered through reading and listening into honey.

4. Occasional speaking: Articulating the unique, original ideas—entirely your own—that you have written down based on the data gathered through reading (3) and listening (2).

5. Occasional sharing: Sharing these original ideas via social media platforms.

In Surah Al-Alaq, Allah commanded humans to read twice and to write once with the pen.

However, beyond dedicating an entire Surah (68/Nun/Al-Qalam) to writing—which begins with an oath upon the pen—Allah the Almighty also emphatically highlighted the importance of writing in the Quran's longest verse (the verse concerning debt contracts).

So, what happens if a person fails to do justice to these five stages of learning?

These five stages constitute the chain of human development and transformation; if this chain is broken, the dangers awaiting the individual include neurodegenerative and cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia.

If a person does not commit the knowledge gained through reading and listening to writing—engaging in the processes of *tezekkür* (recollection), *tefekkür* (contemplation), *taakkul* (reasoning), *tedebbür* (deep reflection), *tevekkül* (trust in the Divine), and *teşekkür* (gratitude)—they commit an act of ingratitude for the blessing (*küfran-ı nimet*).

Just as the stomach craves food, the gut—acting as the "second brain"—digests it, and the large intestine completes the digestive system by serving an excretory function.

The brain seeks information and desires to interpret and project that information outwardly.

The brain is a human being's most precious organ.

For this reason, true death is "brain death."

If the brain has died, even if the heart continues to beat, the individual is no longer a human being in the true sense, but merely a biological organism.

To remain vital, the brain constantly seeks to see or read new things, listen to diverse content, and write or create original works.

If the brain is not provided with the means to see, read, listen, and write, it effectively begins to consume itself.

Indeed, the root cause of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia is the brain harming itself due to a lack of necessary input—much like a kidney suffers damage when deprived of water.

Allah the Almighty points to this truth in the following verse:

"And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed: ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase [My favor] upon you; but if you are ungrateful, indeed, My punishment is severe.'” (Ibrahim, 14/7)
